Turkiet

Bjälke i ögat

A Kassam rocket was fired into southern Israel from the Gaza Strip Wednesday morning, damaging a factory in the Sdot Negev Regional Council area.
The attack came after IAF aircraft struck in the Gaza Strip overnight Thursday, targeting a weapons cache in the north and two smuggling tunnels in the south. The IDF action was a response to several rocket attacks that targeted southern Israel on Thursday.

Antisemitism i Tyskland

Israelis, 22 and 18, attacked in Berlin
A Berlin police spokesman told the Jerusalem Post on Monday that two young Israelis were violently attacked in a Berlin disco because of their nationality. The spokesman said the attack prompted the police to issue a statement terming the attack as “anti-Semitic.”

A Jewish dance group was attacked with stones by a group of children and teenagers during a performance at a street festival in the Germany city of Hannover, police said Thursday. One dancer suffered a leg injury and the group then canceled their performance. The teenagers also used a megaphone to shout anti-Semitic slurs during the Saturday afternoon attack, Hannover police spokesman Thorsten Schiewe said.

Hamas-Fatah fuel spat leaves thousands in the dark
The continued power struggle between Hamas and Fatah has left tens of thousands of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip in the dark following the closure of the area’s main power plant. The power plant, which supplies 25% of electricity to the Gaza Strip, was shut down on Friday night because of a dispute between the rival Palestinian parties over payment for fuel that is needed to keep it running.Hamas and Fatah traded allegations over the power outage, with each party blaming the other for the crisis. The Hamas government accused the Palestinian Authority government in the West Bank of failing to deliver the fuel although it had received payment for the supply. The PA, on the other hand, blamed Hamas for the electric outage and said that the Hamas government was not collecting money from consumers in the Gaza Strip.

Liebermans fredsplan

My blueprint for a resolution
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results,” Albert Einstein once said.
Since 1993, successive governments, supported by the international community, have tried to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict using the flawed paradigm of land for peace. Each time, the same formula was attempted, but failed every time because of Arab recalcitrance.Increasingly, the international community has started to demand that Israel return to the pre-1967 armistice lines as the basis of any resolution to the conflict. This has largely happened because there is a misunderstanding that the dispute is territorial in nature and confusion on international law and precedent. Most importantly, the Israeli leadership has historically provided no alternatives to this paradigm. Those who claim that Israel must return to the socalled Green Line need to examine UN Security Council Resolution 242, the legal framework created following the 1967 war when the territories were conquered. The resolution purposely never called for a full withdrawal from the West Bank. Lord Caradon, the main drafter of the resolution, called the pre-1967 lines “artificial and undesirable”, another drafter, Eugene V. Rostow, US undersecretary of state for political affairs in 1967, said Israel needs to retreat only to “secure and recognized borders, which need not be the same as the armistice demarcation lines.”...

....The solution lies not in appeasing the maximalist territorial demands of the Palestinians, but in truly creating “two states for two peoples.”The current demands from some in the international community are to create a homogeneous pure Palestinian state and a binational state in Israel. This becomes the one-and-a-half to half state solution. For lasting peace and security we need to create true political division between Arabs and Jews, with each enjoying self-determination.Therefore, for a lasting and fair solution, there needs to be an exchange of populated territories to create two largely homogeneous states, one Jewish Israeli and the other Arab Palestinian. Of course, this is not to preclude that minorities will remain in either state where they will receive full civil rights.

Malaysia seeks emergency UN session on Gaza flotilla deaths
Arab and Muslim members of the United Nations, led by Malaysia, are working toward assembling an emergency UN session to discuss Israel's last month raid of a Gaza-bound flotilla, Haaretz learned late Tuesday.

Rapport från FN:s mänskorättsråd

En kritisk rapport om de senaste tre veckorna i FN:s mänskorättsråd skriven av Anne Bayefski från Eye on the UN kan läsas här:
Why Is U.S. Supporting Sham U.N. Human Rights Council?
The U.N. Human Rights Council ended its latest three-week session on Friday by abandoning human rights victims the world over and contributing to the spread of anti-semitism. With the United States now a member of the Council, the Obama administration is neck deep in the Big Muddy but telling Americans to push on.
President Obama’s decision to join the Council, the U.N.’s lead human rights body, was one of his first foreign policy moves. It has been an unmitigated disaster – for human rights.

Delen som handlar om Israel härunder

...Israel and Anti-Semitism
In addition to losing every time it cared enough to vote, the Obama administration has utterly failed to diminish the Council’s lethal obsession with Israel and Jews – contrary to its undertakings when it joined. Today, it is clear that U.S. membership has simply given it undeserved credibility.
The Council has a standing agenda of ten items. One is reserved specifically for condemning Israel. One is for all of the other 191 UN states, should anybody consider them to raise “human rights situations that require the Council’s attention.”
The practical consequence of such a skewed agenda was plain this session. On the basis of the regular agenda, five hours were devoted to Israel-bashing and four hours were devoted to all other countries.
The Council thought that was insufficient. By deciding to hold an additional “urgent debate” over the pro-Hamas blockade-busting enterprise, they spent another 4.5 hours on Israel.
In total, the Council spent more than twice as much time on Israel than the rest of the world taken together. Sitting there twiddling its thumbs was the Obama administration, which made no objection to the change in the procedural rules to increase the amount of time spent on Israel.
To get a full sense of the U.N. Human Rights Council pathology, consider the number of Israel-focused investigations in play at this session. First, on June 1 the Council chartered a supposed “investigation” of Israel over the flotilla event (after already deciding to “condemn” Israel for its “outrageous attack.”)
Second, on June 14 the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay announced the formation of a three-person committee to follow-up the findings of the infamous Goldstone Report. The report is a modern manifestation of the ancient blood libel against the Jewish people, since it alleges that Israel really intended to murder civilians rather than defend itself against eight years of rocket attacks. (In Goldstone’s words, Israel "deliberately…terrorize[d] a civilian population” and Israeli "violence against civilians w[as] part of a deliberate policy.")
And third, the Council took up a document from another of its investigators who is charged with reporting on Israeli human rights violations on a year-round basis. September 11 conspiracy enthusiast Richard Falk advised the Council this month that 4 million Palestinians have a right to return to Israel (thereby eliminating a Jewish state), and encouraged the Council to back a “Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions campaign” (intended to isolate and cripple the country).
That’s a total of three separate investigations on Israel alone currently sponsored by the Human Rights Council. But as part of the Obama administration’s decision to become a member, it also decided American tax dollars should pay for it.
So U.S. taxpayers are now on the hook for 22% of the cost – trips, meals, assistants, press conferences, webcasts, printing…all the everyday items that make hate-mongering possible.
Last, but not least, there was the old-fashioned anti-semitism characteristic of the day-in and day-out proceedings. This session, Syrian representative Rania Al Rifaiy told the Council that Israeli school children “sing merrily as they go to school and I quote 'With my teeth I will rip your flesh. With my mouth I will suck your blood.'"
Sitting in the room listening to her, not a peep of protest was uttered by the American delegation. Nor was anything heard from the Belgian president of the Human Rights Council, who in the past has had no difficulty interrupting and reprimanding speakers on less popular themes.
Bottom Lines
With the conclusion of this latest Human Rights Council session, the grim statistics sum up the disastrous disregard for human rights from both the Council and the administration.
There are more Council resolutions and decisions condemning Israel than all other U.N. states combined.
The Council has held fourteen regular sessions on human rights everywhere and six special sessions on Israel alone. The Council has had only one urgent debate about human rights anywhere – on Israel.
The Council is now sponsoring three simultaneous investigations of Israel. Seven other countries are subject to a single Council inquiry, and 181 states are deemed not worth investigating at all.Why is the Obama administration there and why are Americans paying for it?

Turkiet dödade över 100 i flygattack

Turkey says 130 Kurdish rebels killed, warns of more attacks
ANKARA (AFP) – The Turkish military said Friday that at least 130 Kurdish rebels were killed in Turkey and neighbouring northern Iraq since March, warning that violence by the militants was set to rise further.
The outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been leading a 25-year insurgency against Turkey, has recently stepped up its attacks, prompting the army to carry out at least two air raids and a small-scale
ground incursion on rebel bases in northern Iraq.
The majority of the PKK losses came from a May 20 air strike on rebel hideouts in the Hakurk region of northern Iraq following intelligence that a large
group of militants were moving towards Turkey, General Fahri Kir, the head of the internal security operations department, said.

Turkey refuses to talk to the PKK and says the rebels would either abandon their armed struggle or face the army.

If Israel goes down, we all go down

If Israel goes down, we all go down
Anger over Gaza is a distraction. We cannot forget that Israel is the West’s best ally in a turbulent region
By José María Aznar

"For far too long now it has been unfashionable in Europe to speak up for Israel. In the wake of the recent incident on board a ship full of anti-Israeli activists in the Mediterranean, it is hard to think of a more unpopular cause to champion. In an ideal world, the assault by Israeli commandos on the Mavi Marmara would not have ended up with nine dead and a score wounded. In an ideal world, the soldiers would have been peacefully welcomed on to the ship. In an ideal world, no state, let alone a recent ally of Israel such as Turkey, would have sponsored and organised a flotilla whose sole purpose was to create an impossible situation for Israel: making it choose between giving up its security policy and the naval blockade, or risking the wrath of the world...

...Uniquely in the West, it is the only democracy whose very existence has been questioned since its inception. In the first instance, it was attacked by its neighbours using the conventional weapons of war. Then it faced terrorism culminating in wave after wave of suicide attacks. Now, at the behest of radical Islamists and their sympathisers, it faces a campaign of delegitimisation through international law and diplomacy...

...The real threats to regional stability, however, are to be found in the rise of a radical Islamism which sees Israel’s destruction as the fulfilment of its religious destiny and, simultaneously in the case of Iran, as an expression of its ambitions for regional hegemony. Both phenomena are threats that affect not only Israel, but also the wider West and the world at large.
The core of the problem lies in the ambiguous and often erroneous manner in which too many Western countries are now reacting to this situation. It is easy to blame Israel for all the evils in the Middle East. Some even act and talk as if a new understanding with the Muslim world could be achieved if only we were prepared to sacrifice the Jewish state on the altar. This would be folly."

Ankara to downgrade J'lem ties
"Turkey is considering downgrading diplomatic relations with Israel and reviewing economic and military cooperation unless Jerusalem takes steps to make amends for the deadly raid on Gaza-bound aid ships, a Turkish official said on Thursday. The official said that Turkey wants Israel to apologize for the raid, return the seized ships, agree to an international investigation and offer compensation for the victims. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government rules.
Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said, in an interview with Israel Radio, that Israel has no intention of agreeing to Turkey's demands."Whoever has demands like these, doesn't have good intentions," Ayalon said."

Khaled Abu Toameh vill skriva sanningen

Journalist says only truth will set Palestine free
THE Palestinian diaspora in Australia is facing an unexpected catastrophe. Normally, May 15, Israel's Independence Day, is the most important day of their year for celebrating their victimhood: the catastrophe, as they see it, of the founding of Israel.
But, this year, visiting fresh from the streets of Gaza, Ramallah and Jerusalem is Khaled Abu Toameh, an Israeli Arab Muslim journalist, who declares: "I'd rather be a second-class citizen in Israel than a first-class citizen in any Arab country."
And some in the diaspora are not happy about his visit. Ali Kazak, a former ambassador for the Palestine Liberation Organisation, circulated an email this week accusing Abu Toameh of being an "Israeli propagandist" on the "Israeli payroll" and warning people not to be misled by him.
Kazak told The Australian: "Khaled Abu Toameh is a traitor." These are dangerous words in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and Kazak admits that many Palestinians are murdered in the West Bank and Gaza for being traitors...

Iran prisas av FN:s mänskorättsråd

..." it is shameful that three of the ‘Worst of the Worst’ regimes now actually sit on the Council (China, Cuba and Saudi Arabia) and a fourth (Libya) was just elected,..."

UN rebukes Iran for rights abuses
"Western nations rebuked Iran over its human rights record Tuesday after overcoming an attempt by Iran and its Muslim allies to block the statement from being read aloud in the UN Human Rights Council."

Furthermore, there has been a recent, renewed urgency around the imminent executions of several known political prisoners...

UN Human Rights Council Coddles Iran
Just as Iranians were reminded of their stolen June 2009 election and continued oppression, the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) decided to kick them while they’re down. On June 10, with the active involvement and approval of the Obama administration, the Council adopted a decision on human rights in Iran that was a sentence long and contained no condemnation whatsoever. The context was a review by the Council of Iran’s human rights record, as part of the Council’s consideration of all 192 UN states. The review featured a vigorous defense by Iranian representatives of Iran’s stellar human rights achievements, followed by Iran’s rejection of a host of “recommendations” made to improve its actual behavior. The “outcome” was a sentence identical for dictatorships and democracies alike, in which the Council merely refers to a bundle of documents containing praise, criticisms and responses without drawing any conclusion attributable to the Council itself. The incomprehensible UN decision reads: "The Human Rights Council...Adopts…the report of the Working Group on the Islamic Republic of Iran, together with the views of the Islamic Republic of Iran concerning the recommendations and/or conclusions, as well as its voluntary commitments and its replies presented before the adoption of the outcome by the plenary to questions or issues that were not sufficiently addressed during the interactive dialogue in the Working Group.”The reaction from the Obama administration was to declare victory and to manufacture something positive to say about Iran. On June 10, U.S. Ambassador Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe rushed to the UN microphones in Geneva to announce repeatedly: “I have to emphasize that we are very pleased that Iran was willing to participate at all…. In the case of Iran, we applaud the willingness to participate at all…. We’re pleased that at least they were willing to show up.”Praising Iran despite its total disregard of the fundamentals of human decency is the antithesis of the supposed liberal human rights mantra. Instead of buoying the Human Rights Council’s performance, the Obama administration is sinking with it.

IHH Preparations for a Violent Confrontation with IDF SoldiersAboard the Turkish Ship Mavi Marmara
Initial conclusions from questioning passengers and examining equipment on board the ship

Overview
1. An initial analysis of statements taken from passengers aboard the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara after it was towed to the port of Ashdod show that operatives belonging to the radical Islamic Turkish IHH1 led the violent confrontation with the IDF.
2. The statements confirmed that the violence met by the IDF soldiers was not spontaneous but rather an organized, premeditated action carried out by a hard core of 40 IHH operatives (among the 500 passengers). The operatives, who acted according to a clearly-defined internal hierarchy, boarded the ship in the port of Istanbul without undergoing a security inspection (as opposed to the other passengers, who boarded in Antalya after a full inspection).
3. The IHH operatives’ preparations included handing out walkie-talkies as they boarded the ship, taking over the upper deck, setting up a situation room for communications, and a briefing given to the operatives two hours before the confrontation by IHH head Bülent Yildirim, who was on board the ship and commanded his men. IHH operatives wore ceramic vests and gas masks, and were armed with large quantities of cold weapons which they had prepared from equipment found on board (knives, axes, metal cables, metal pipes used as clubs, wrenches, etc.). They were also equipped with box cutters which had been prepared on the upper deck in advance.
4. The passengers, including the IHH operatives, stated that there were close relations between the organization and Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and that the Turkish government was involved in preparations for the flotilla. The statements reinforce the original assassment that the objective of the flotilla was not merely to bring humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, but focused on provocation and a violent confrontation with Israel.

Abbas to Obama: I'm against lifting the Gaza naval blockade
"One of the points that Abbas raised is that the naval blockade imposed by Israel on the Strip should not be lifted at this stage. The European diplomats said Egypt has made it clear to Israel, the U.S and the European Union that it is also opposes the lifting of the naval blockade because of the difficulty in inspecting the ships that would enter and leave the Gaza port. "

Kommodor Taavitsainen analyserar Gazakonvojen

Gazan laivaisku: Israelin tiedustelu teki virheen ja aktivistit suunnittelivat taistelua - lue analyysi tapahtumista
"Epäonnistuiko Israelin tiedustelu laivaiskussa? Halusiko joku ruumiita laajan huomion saavuttamiseksi? Onko Israelilla laillinen oikeus Gazan merisaartoon?

Tayeb Abdel Rahim, a senior aide to Abbas, said that the Palestinians recently told US special envoy George Mitchell that Israel's request to launch direct negotiations was "unacceptable."

The PA during the proximity talks, May 2010

Conclusion
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, on April 23, 2009:
"We will only work with a Palestinian Authority government that unambiguously and explicitly accepts the Quartet's principles:a commitment to non-violence, recognition of Israel, and acceptance of previous agreements and obligations, including the Road Map." ["Phase I of Road Map: "All official Palestinian institutions end incitement against Israel."]
Examining the Palestinian Authority leaders' statements, its education of youth, and its controlled media, it is clear that the Palestinian Authority has not complied with the conditions indicated by the Secretary of State, nor has it fulfilled its commitment to "work against incitement of any sort."
In the first month since the start of the proximity talks, not only has the PA failed to "unambiguously and explicitly" accept these conditions, but they have done the opposite: The Palestinian Authority has "unambiguously and explicitly" denied Israel's existence, incited to hatred, and glorified terror and violence.

Hamas skärper greppet om Gaza

Hamas gjorde senaste vecka räder mot flera frivilligorganisationer i Gaza och stängde deras kontor. Drabbade blev bl.a. Sharik Youth Institution, Bonat Al-Mustaqbal (Future Builders) Society, the South Society for Women’s Health, the Women and Children Society,Palestinian Mini Parliament and the National Reconciliation Committee.
Hamas raids, closes NGO offices (Jerusalem Post)
"Hamas’s security forces on Monday and Tuesday raided the offices of several non-governmental organizations in the Gaza Strip and confiscated equipment and furniture, drawing sharp condemnations from human rights groups. The sources said the raids were carried out by agents belonging to Hamas’s Internal Security apparatus without court permission.Hamas spokesmen in the Gaza Strip on Thursday refused to comment on the raids. After conducting a thorough search of the offices of the organizations, the Hamas security agents confiscated files, documents, computers, fax machines and other equipment. The agents also informed the managers and workers of the organizations of the Hamas government’s decision to close them down indefinitely...."

Gazakonvojens efterspel

Ship to Gazas problem – kulturkrock
Citat:

PM: Mercenaries aboard Gaza ship
The prime minister's remarks followed IDF reports that a group of about 50 men – of the 700 on board – had been identified as being well-trained, and a ringleader who recruited them from the northwestern Turkey city of Bursa. The group was split up into smaller squads that were distributed throughout the deck and communicated with one another with handheld communication devices. The men wore bulletproof vests and gas masks and laid an ambush for the Shayetet 13 soldiers as they rapelled onto the ship's deck from a helicopter.

Antisemitiska grupper i initiativtagarens nätverk

As Israel went offline for the Jewish sabbath, YouTube removed most versions of Latma's hit parody song We Con the World. If you try to access the song on YouTube you receive the notification:
This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Warner/ Chappell Music, Inc. .
Copyright experts we advised with before posting the song told us in no uncertain terms that we were within our rights to use the song because we did so in accordance with the Fair Use Doctrine. The Fair Use Doctrine, copied and pasted below from the US Copyright Office stipulates that it is legal and permissible to use copyrighted material under the fair use doctrine for purposes of parody.
Copyright attorneys also warned us that given our clearly lawful use of the song We are the World, if anyone wished to silence our voices, they wouldn't target us. Instead they would target YouTube. It is YouTube's standard practice to remove any material that they receive even the flimsiest threat for because the company wishes to avoid all litigation.

At the same time, this is not YouTube's first move to silence Israeli voices. During Operation Cast Lead, the IDF Spokesman's Unit established a YouTube channel and began posting combat footage on its channel to bypass the anti-Israel media and go directly to news consumers.
Shortly after the IDF channel began making waves, YouTube - which is owned by Google - removed IDF videos from the website. After the move evoked a storm of protest, YouTube restored them but flagged the videos in the same manner it flags pornography.

En annan expert på internationell lag, Robbie Sabel, säger: "A state, in a time of conflict, can impose anembargo, and while it cannot carry out embargo activities in the territorialwaters of a third party, it can carry out embargo activities ininternational waters.
Within this framework it is legal to detain a civilian vessel trying tobreak an embargo and if in the course of detaining the vessel, force is usedagainst the forces carrying out the detention then that force has everyright to act in self defense."

USA:s vicepresident ger också uttryck för samma åsikt: "Vice President Joe Biden agreed that Israel had a right to inspect the cargo. "You can argue whether Israel should have dropped people onto that ship or not ... but the truth of the matter is, Israel has a right to know — they're at war with Hamas — has a right to know whether or not arms are being smuggled in," he said."

Israel obeyed international law: Legally, the Gaza flotilla conflict is an open-and-shut case
Alan Dershowitz, professor at Harvard Law School
"Although the wisdom of Israel's actions in stopping the Gaza flotilla is open to question, the legality of its actions is not. What Israel did was entirely consistent with both international and domestic law."

Three of the four Turks killed on shipsought Martyr's death

'I want to be a shahid': Flotilla activist hoped for martyrdom

Läs vad Israels ambassadör i USA skriver i New York Times:
"...What the videos don’t show, however, are several curious aspects Israeli authorities are now investigating. First, about 100 of those detained from the boats were carrying immense sums in their pockets — nearly a million euros in total. Second, Israel discovered spent bullet cartridges on the Mavi Marmara that are of a caliber not used by the Israeli commandos, some of whom suffered gunshot wounds. Also found on the boat were propaganda clips showing passengers “injured” by Israeli forces; these videos, however, were filmed during daylight, hours before the nighttime operation occurred. .."
