USA och EU har utövat påtryckningar för att Fayyad skall sitta kvar men bland palestiniena har han inte stort understöd. I det senaste parlamentsvalet som hölls 2006 fick Fayyads parti omkring 2 % av rösterna.
Fayyad som har utbildats i väst har fungerat som någon sorts garant för att det ekonomiska bistånd som västvärlden pumpar in i de palestinska myndigheternas budget inte går direkt i Fatahledarnas fickor.
Motsättningarna mellan Abbas och Fayyad blev ändå till slut för stora för att Fayyad skulle anse det möjligt att fortsätta på premiärministerposten.

Khaled Abu Toameh har skrivit två artiklar om ämnet:
"The Fatah leaders are yearning for the days of Yasser Arafat, when they
were able to steal international aid earmarked for helping Palestinians.
The Palestinians' problem with Fayyad is that he did not sit even one
day in an Israeli prison. For them, graduating from an Israeli prison is
even more important that going to any university.
...Had Fayyad killed a Jew or sent one of his sons to throw stones at an
Israeli vehicle, he would have earned the respect and support of a
large number of Palestinians. In short, Palestinians do not consider
Fayyad a hero despite his hard efforts to build state institutions and a
fine economy.The Palestinians' only heros are those who fight against Israel or are sitting in Israeli prison.
Just last week, a public opinion poll showed that Marwan Barghouti, the Fatah leader who is serving five life terms in prison for his role in murdering Israelis, would be elected as president if he ran in the next elections."
"The claim that Fayyad's resignation is a major blow to the peace process
is not only untrue, it is ridiculous. These claims are intended to
create the impression, totally false, that were it not for Fayyad's
resignation, the peace process would have been salvaged. The truth is
that Abbas was the one who decided to boycott the peace talks until
Israel met his conditions. "
