Hamas manipulated and intimidated the media in Gaza. Why was that kept from us? (The Telegraph Alan Johnson)
"The Foreign Press Association (FPA) issued an astonishing protest
yesterday about "blatant, incessant, forceful and unorthodox"
intimidation of journalists in the Gaza Strip by Hamas. "In
several cases," they complained, "foreign reporters working in Gaza
have been harassed, threatened or questioned over stories." The FPA said
this amounted to "denying readers and viewers an objective picture from
the ground," adding "we are also aware that Hamas is
trying to put in place a 'vetting' procedure that would, in effect,
allow for the blacklisting of specific journalists. Such a procedure is
vehemently opposed by the FPA." The statement raises a lot of questions. Here is one: why have British broadcasters not mentioned any of this to their viewers?..."
Hamas Cheerleaders: Professional Failures of the Western Media in Gaza (BESA Prof. Eytan Gilboa)
"Executive Summary: Western media coverage of Operation
Protective Edge has been marred by deep anti-Israel bias and serious
failures, both professional and ethical. Hamas has terrorized foreign
journalists in Gaza, and imposed harsh censorship and limitations on
their movement and work. Consequently, the Western media did not show
any Hamas fighters or images of rockets firing from populated areas in
Gaza, instead they exclusively focused on civilian casualties, primarily
of women and children. They also played “the daily civilian casualty
competition,” comparing the number of casualties on each side to
demonstrate how Israel’s reactions were disproportional, and causing too
many civilian casualties and too much damage. With such distorted and
misleading coverage in Western media, it is of little surprise that
these reports have given rise to increased anti-Semitism and hostility
towards Israel. .."
"Hamas lies systematically, instructing civilians to misinform the foreign press. It lies habitually, with a formidable record of mendacity from previous conflicts. And it lies guiltlessly, convinced that the objectives of ‘resistance’ supersede quaint notions of truth-telling.
Nonetheless, since Israel launched Operation Protective Edge over a
month ago, Western media have relied on Gaza’s Hamas-run Health Ministry
– as here, here and here
– for casualty tallies. As one reporter told the Washington Post, when
it comes to body counts, the Hamas Health Minister Ashraf Al-Qidra is "the only game in town." ..."
